Every May, the Philippines celebrates National Heritage Month—a time to honour the country’s history, traditions, and cultural identity.
At Sea Explorers Philippines, our story has always been closely connected to the sea and to one of the most recognisable symbols of Filipino island life: the bangka.
For generations, bangkas have carried people, food, supplies, and goods between islands. They have supported fishing communities, connected remote villages, and made journeys across the Philippine seas possible.
For us, the bangka is much more than a boat.
It is Filipino heritage afloat.
What Is a Bangka?
A bangka is a traditional Filipino outrigger boat with a narrow hull and supports on both sides. These supports, known locally as katig, help keep the boat balanced and stable on the water.
This practical design makes the bangka well suited to coastal waters, shallow reefs, and island crossings.
Bangkas come in many shapes and sizes. Small versions are commonly used for fishing, while larger boats can carry passengers, supplies, diving equipment, and other cargo.
Although their size and design may vary from one region to another, bangkas remain an important part of everyday life in many Filipino coastal communities.
Built by Hand
Traditional bangkas are often built using wood and bamboo—materials that are strong, practical, and relatively easy to repair.
Many are still made by hand by local boat builders who learned their craft from earlier generations. Building a bangka requires patience, experience, and a deep understanding of how the boat will move through the water.
Because each vessel is carefully constructed, no two bangkas are exactly the same. Every boat reflects the knowledge and skill of the people who built it.
The Bangka and Sea Explorers
Bangkas have been part of the Sea Explorers story from the beginning.
Over the years, they have carried our guests to colourful reefs, marine sanctuaries, remote islands, and unforgettable dive sites throughout the Visayas.
Today, our dive trips operate from four destinations:
Each destination offers a completely different underwater experience. However, many dive days begin in the same familiar way: stepping aboard a Filipino bangka and heading out to sea.
Travelling from One Island to Another
A bangka may take divers to a nearby house reef or carry them across open water to an island several hours away.
From Dauin, our boats travel to the world-famous reefs of Apo Island. From Malapascua, they bring divers to Kimud Shoal, Gato Island, and other exciting dive areas.
In Cabilao, bangkas provide access to beautiful walls, coral reefs, and nearby islands. In Sipalay, they carry divers to colourful reefs, historic wrecks, Turtle Island, and Danjugan Island.
Bangkas also play a role in longer journeys between destinations.
Our Island Hopping Dive Safari connects Moalboal, Dauin, and Cabilao through a combination of land and sea transfers. These journeys are made possible by reliable boats and experienced Filipino crews who understand the local waters.
More Than Just a Boat Ride
For many guests, travelling by bangka becomes one of the most memorable parts of their diving holiday.
The journey offers time to enjoy the fresh sea air, watch the coastline pass by, and see distant islands slowly appear on the horizon.
Before each dive, guests prepare their equipment on board. Between dives, they can rest, enjoy a meal, exchange stories, and take in the surrounding views.
The bangka is therefore much more than a way to reach a dive site. It becomes part of the adventure and part of the memories guests take home with them.
The People Behind Every Journey
Every successful bangka trip depends on a skilled and hardworking crew.
Captains and crew members understand the local waters, including currents, tides, changing weather, and the safest routes between islands. They prepare the boats, load diving equipment, assist guests, and work closely with the dive team throughout the day.
Behind the scenes, boat builders, mechanics, and maintenance teams also play an essential role in keeping every vessel safe and ready for the sea.
